Anglican Church of the Resurection

In God We Trust

Strives to be a dynamic, God centered and spiritually driven Parish

About image
  1. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The parish falls under the Anglican Church of Southern Africa, within the Diocese of Johannesburg and is located in Zone 7 Meadowlands – SOWETO.
The Church of the Resurrection is located in a typical township setting and is surrounded by schools, old municipal houses, shack dwellings and interspersed middle-income houses.
  2. MEMBERSHIP AND DEMOGRAPHICS
The church roll currently approximately 1,200 registered members, who worship at either one of the two Sunday services. The membership of the church has fluctuated over the years with a number of parishioners leaving, some to join the new charismatic churches and others returning back to the fold.
Most of the registered members are residents of Meadowlands with a few coming from other suburbs within Soweto. There are also members who no longer reside in Meadowlands or Soweto but have a sentimental attachment to the church (going back to the days when their parents used to be members of the parish).
Furthermore, the members are a mix of very influential, professionals (with high intellect), business and community leaders, skilled artisans as well as those of humble backgrounds.
The diversity within the parish provides for a stimulating environment where members are able to enrich each other on spiritual, family, social, political and business-related matters.
  3. SPIRITUALITY
The parishioners are dynamic, diverse and deeply spiritual and aware of the social and political challenges surrounding them. Emphasis is placed on the ministry of all believers where all are encouraged to participate fully in services and continue with the ministry in their various fields of work.
The parish embraces Anglicanism however this is continuously mixed with the diverse cultures to further enhance participation and freedom of expression in worship.
There is a strong culture of prayer that underpins and permeates all areas of worship.
    Some of the activities that contribute to spiritual growth include lay parishioners being involved in;
  • Scripture reading
  • Assisting with the chalice
  • Taking communion to the sick
  • Counseling
SERVICES
The two main services are held each Sunday morning at 07h00 and 10h00 and others on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
SUNDAYS (07h00) – Holy Eucharist
There is an average of 200 attendees at these services, with a higher number joining the services during the warmer months of the year. Communicants are more of your mature, professional and economically active individuals.

At this service, more elderly parishioners (ie. those already on pension) as well at the young people are in attendance. A lot of families with children younger than 10 years tend to worship during this time. On average, approximately 350 people attend this service.
(7am&10h00) – SUNDAY SCHOOL (Divinity Team)
WEDNESDAYS (10am &18h00) – Holy Eucharist
The 10am service is attended, predominantly by unemployed and pensioned individuals; however, all members of the parish are invited to attend when available.
